Exhibition “Russian Classical Art of the 18th – Early 20th Century”
About exhibition
You will see works from various genres and movements: Ceremonial and intimate portraits of the 18th century that demonstrate artists' interest in the individual, their personality and status, and celebrate the triumph of reason. 19th-century landscapes and still lifes by renowned masters of Russian painting: I. K. Aivazovsky, I. I. Shishkin, I. I. Levitan, I. F. Khrutsky, and many others. Canvases by V. I. Surikov — the great Russian painter originally from Siberia. The Krasnoyarsk Art Museum named after V. I. Surikov houses a large collection of his works — from his very first independent piece to his last major painting. Works by early 20th-century artists such as I. E. Repin, K. A. Korovin, P. I. Petrovichev, and others. This period saw sweeping changes in art: alongside realism, movements such as Russian Impressionism and Symbolism began to develop, and various artistic associations emerged. A collection of Russian iconography — icons from various schools and traditions of central Russia, rare examples of Siberian icons, skillfully crafted metal icon covers (oklads), and copper Old Believer castings. Works by rebel artists and the Peredvizhniki (the Wanderers) are represented in genre scenes, portraits, and landscapes. They celebrated Russia’s nature and depicted the everyday life of Russian society as it was, without embellishment.
