The exhibition is rich and varied in its content: it features canvases by artists of the academic school executed according to the strict canons of 19th-century art—artists who lived through one of the most pivotal moments in Russian history. The 19th century is called the golden age of Russian culture. Portraits, landscapes and genre scenes of that time are represented by fine examples of the classical school of painting—works by V. Vereshchagin, P. Ermolaev (Denisov) and A. Stepanov. The turn of the 19th–20th centuries was a period of hopes, searching and experimentation, a time of rejecting the old and the birth of the new. Becoming acquainted with the results of the creative quests of painters of this complex era is important for anyone interested in the history of our country and living in rapidly changing times. Paintings by L. Turzhansky, S. Vinogradov, A. Volkov, I. Grabar, N. Krymov, A. Kuprin, V. Meshkov, A. Samokhvalov and Z. Serebriakova are excellent examples of the brushwork of recognized masters of painting. More than 40 works await their viewer.
