Exhibition “Russian Arcadia. Landscapes of the 19th–20th Centuries”

About exhibition

“Russian Arcadia. Landscapes of the 19th–20th Centuries” is an exhibition dedicated to the 130th anniversary of the museum’s founding. The exhibition opens with works from the first half of the 19th century created in the spirit of Romanticism by Ivan Ivanov. This tradition is continued by Ivan Aivazovsky, Lev Lagorio and Alexey Bogolyubov. The flowering of the realist landscape school is associated with the work of the itinerant artists (the Peredvizhniki). The exhibition features works by members of the association such as Ivan Shishkin, Vasily Polenov and Isaac Levitan. A separate section is devoted to masters of the academic school — Vladimir Orlovsky, Alexey Pisemsky and Yuly Klever. The 20th century is represented by works of local artists — Dmitry Arkhangelsky, Alexey Motorin, Ivan Lezhnin, as well as a rare work by Pyotr Andrzeevsky. The ideas of the Sixtiers (the 1960s generation) are embodied in the works of Andrei Mylnikov, Pyotr Ossovsky and Eduard Bragovsky. Special attention is given to the landscapes of Boris Klevogin. The exhibition concludes with the works of Arkady Plastov, People's Artist of the USSR.
