Exhibition "The Russian Empire in the 19th Century"
About exhibition
In Kaluga lived former exiled Decembrists — G. S. Batenkov, P. N. Svistunov, and E. P. Obolensky. In the house that once belonged to G. S. Batenkov are displayed items and portraits of figures from the Decembrist era. The exhibition features portrayals of Russian writers: A. S. Pushkin, L. N. Tolstoy, I. S. Turgenev, F. M. Dostoevsky, and N. V. Gogol. During the Patriotic War of 1812 the non-commissioned officer of the Azov Musketeer Regiment, S. A. Starichkov, became famous; he died in captivity of wounds received at the Battle of Austerlitz but saved the regimental banner. Among the objects related to the Patriotic War of 1812, the principal relic is rightly considered to be the banner of the Kaluga militia. The exhibition pays considerable attention to the Kaluga merchant class, which played an important role in the life of the city. Kaluga is associated with a number of outstanding figures of Russian culture, among them the composer and teacher N. P. Rakov, and the composers S. S. Tulikov and E. M. Dreyzin.
