The museum was opened as a public institution in 1971 and in 1990 became a branch of the Saratov Regional Museum of Local Lore. The museum's collections, numbering over 8,000 items, contain materials on the history and culture of the town of Arkadak and Arkadak District. Of particular historical and cultural value are the antique pieces of furniture: the desk of the first postmaster of Arkadak District, Larionov; armchairs from the estate of General Raevsky; and the desk of the manager of Prince Vyazemsky's distillery. The museum displays permanent exhibitions: 'Farm and Everyday Life of Peasants from the Late 19th to the Early 20th Century', 'Charm of Bygone Days' (on the life and everyday life of the intelligentsia of the village of Arkadak in the late 19th–early 20th centuries), 'Let Us Bow to Those Great Years' (Arkadak District and Arkadak residents during the Great Patriotic War), 'The Old Apartment' (interior of an apartment from the late 1950s–early 1960s), and 'Arkadak Today'. The museum's art gallery exhibits paintings by local artists.
