Exhibition 'Paleontology of the Don Region'
About exhibition
Two large sections are offered for study: Fossils of representatives of the Khaprov fauna (fragments of skeletons of Gromov's elephant, an Alyutensky camel, elasmotherium, the Priazov giraffe and other animals that lived on the Don more than two million years ago). Mammoth fauna of the glaciation period (skeleton of a primitive bison, fossil fragments of mammoth, woolly rhinoceros, large-horned deer, Siberian elasmotherium and other animals that lived more than ten thousand years ago). The open storage of the paleontological collection is located in the museum's basement rooms. The tour begins in the foyer, where the world's only holotype is displayed — the skull of Gromov's elephant, dated to 2.5 million years, discovered in 1957 in Rostov-on-Don.
