Exhibition “The Korobov Chambers — a unique monument of 17th-century civil architecture”
About exhibition
The Korobov Chambers, built in the second half of the 17th century on the outskirts of Kaluga by a wealthy merchant, captivate with their beauty and remain one of the city's attractions to this day. It is no coincidence that False Dmitry and Marina Mnishek were housed here, and for a long time the building was known as "Marina Mnishek's House." Like many old houses, the chambers have their legends and mysteries: underground passages, hiding places and concealed treasures have long intrigued the people of Kaluga. The vaulted tops of the massive stone walls, the old thick masonry and the window grilles immerse visitors in the world of old Russian life. The exhibition's theme is tied to the history of the ancient chambers: visitors are offered interesting information about everyday life in the merchant environment, also based on preserved documents that reflect the Korobovs' trade activities, family members' places of residence, kinship ties and other facts. As part of the exhibition experience there is an interactive element using antique objects: visitors have the opportunity not only to see but also to hold household items from past centuries — antique irons, a steelyard, a metal mortar and a sugar cutter. Becoming acquainted with the traditions and customs of Kaluga's merchant class will allow visitors to plunge into the atmosphere of long-gone days.
