Exhibition "Research Vessel Vityaz"
About exhibition
The legendary vessel in the history of oceanology, Vityaz made an outstanding contribution to the study of the World Ocean. Under the flag of the USSR Academy of Sciences she completed 65 scientific voyages, sailed about 800,000 miles, and carried out 7,942 scientific stations. From her deck the maximum depth (11,022 m) of the Mariana Trench was measured, and a new type of animal — pogonophorans — was discovered aboard her. The Vityaz became the cradle of the national school of oceanology; scientists from 50 Russian institutes and from 20 countries around the world took part in its scientific work. The exhibits on board the ship tell the story of Russian maritime expeditions and research in the world's oceans.
