Exhibition 'Peoples of the North Caucasus'
About exhibition
The exhibition presents the culture of the peoples of the North Caucasus — the most multinational region of the Russian Federation. The organic integration of the exhibition with the 'Peoples of the South Caucasus' display within the museum space provides a comprehensive portrayal of the Caucasus as a uniquely ethnically diverse region of the world. The presentation of regional multiethnic culture is realized through a series of themes based on the display of 700 artifacts of traditional culture from the 19th–20th centuries belonging to specific ethnic groups of the North Caucasus. An extensive collection of photographs allows visitors to immerse themselves in the atmosphere of the region’s nature, its harsh mountain way of life, and the world of everyday life and festivities. The exhibition highlights the features of mountain culture — the adaptive specifics of mountain agriculture, means of transport, archaic forms and decoration of household utensils, and characteristic forms of dwelling and interior. Special attention is paid to sets of production, everyday, and ritual costumes, to weapons, to products of domestic crafts, and to ritual/religious objects. The etiquette norms of the mountain peoples are duly represented as important means of social regulation. Emphasizing the cultural phenomena of both the lowland inhabitants and the mountain peoples of the Caucasus reveals the forms of their interaction.
