About exhibition

The exhibition project tells about archaeological monuments and the narratives connected with their study. The exhibition presents several sections that trace the development of archaeology in the Astrakhan region in chronological order: "What Is Archaeology", "Volga Pompeii", "The Past Frozen in Stone", "Steppe Pyramids", "In Search of the Khazar Capital", "In Search of the Khazar Capital: the Samosdelskoye Settlement", "The Great Golden Horde", "Antiquity Underfoot: Archaeology of the City of Astrakhan". Visitors are shown a gallery of material culture from different periods: the Stone Age, Eneolithic, Bronze Age, Early Iron Age, the Medieval period and the Modern era. Over 220 exhibits are on display, including antique knives, arrows, jugs, lamps, a mosaic architectural panel, and more.
