The historic building at 12 Pyatnitskaya Street is associated with the youth of Leo Tolstoy. A service wing was part of the complex of the Vargin merchants' town estate. In the furnished rooms of the house opposite the Church of Paraskeva Pyatnitsa, Lev Nikolaevich (Leo Tolstoy) lived from autumn 1857 until summer 1858. The exhibition reflects the first third of the writer's life and the origins of his creative work. On display are paintings and graphic works by artists Anatoly Kokorin, Oleg Tolstoy, and Boris Shcherbakov; sculptures by Evgeny Lansere; photographs documenting the young writer's life and creative path; and illustrations to his early works, many of which, remaining in the shadow of his great works, are little known to a wide readership. Visitors will become acquainted with the writer's reading circle and his literary idols.
