Exhibition "Kyakhta: Pages of History"
About exhibition
The exhibition presents objects reflecting the economic, spiritual and cultural life of the town of Troitskosavsk together with the Kyakhta settlement at the end of the 19th century. The display features photographs by N. A. Charushin showing views of the trading settlement and the now-vanished town of Maymachen. The exposition describes the specifics of trade between Russia and China through Kyakhta–Troitskosavsk, and the development of culture and education in the town. Samples of trade goods are exhibited: various varieties of tea, Chinese porcelain, examples of Chinese ivory carving, a range of decorative and applied art items, and household objects. Part of the exhibition tells the story of the Great Tea Road. The section "History of Geographical Discoveries in Central Asia" introduces outstanding travelers and explorers and presents Central Asian expeditions that passed through Kyakhta. On display are expedition equipment, personal belongings, photographs and scientific works by well-known explorers of Central Asia such as N. Przhevalsky, F. and S. Müller, V. Obruchev, P. Pallas, I. Gmelin, E. Laxmann, P. Kozlov, G. Potanin and others.
