Exhibition "Kyakhta: Pages of History"
About exhibition
The exhibition presents items reflecting the economic, spiritual and cultural life of the town of Troitskosavsk, including the Kyakhta settlement, at the end of the 19th century. The display uses 19th-century photographs by N. A. Charushin showing views of the trading settlement and the now-vanished town of Maymachen. The exhibition describes the specifics of trade between Russia and China via Kyakhta-Troitskosavsk, and the development of culture and education in the town. On display are examples of trade goods: various kinds of tea, Chinese porcelain, examples of Chinese ivory carving, a variety of decorative and applied art objects, and household items. Part of the exhibition is devoted to the Great Tea Route. The section "History of Geographical Discoveries in Central Asia" introduces outstanding travelers and researchers and presents Central Asian expeditions that passed through Kyakhta. Exhibited items include expedition equipment, personal belongings, photographs, and scientific works by well-known researchers of Central Asia: N. M. Przhevalsky, F. and S. Müller, V. A. Obruchev, P. S. Pallas, I. G. Gmelin, E. K. Laxman, P. K. Kozlov, G. N. Potanin, and others.
