Exhibition "Tiles from the Excavations at Vladychny Dvor"

About exhibition

The exhibition presents the most significant assemblage of objects discovered at Vladychny Dvor by the architectural and archaeological expedition of Saint Petersburg University under the direction of Ilya Antipov. The display includes relief-molded and polychrome tiles dating from the second quarter of the 17th century through the 18th century, as well as smooth painted tiles of the 18th–early 19th centuries, which are elements of stove sets from different periods. The typologically and stylistically heterogeneous ceramics on display, belonging to several stages in the development of tile decoration, testify to the existence of a long-standing tradition of their use in the interior decoration of the Vladychny Dvor buildings, primarily for cladding stoves; however, other uses cannot be ruled out.
