Exhibition "Art of the East"
About exhibition
The Rostov Regional Museum of Fine Arts is hosting the exhibition "Art of the East," featuring works from the 12th–mid-20th centuries from the museum’s collection created by masters from China and Japan. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore Chinese art: examples of 12th–13th century sculpture, porcelain from the 18th to mid-20th centuries, including pieces of exceptional artistic skill from the "Three Emperors" period at the turn of the 17th–18th centuries and later works. In the collection of Japanese decorative and applied arts, particular interest is aroused by miniature sculptures — netsuke — dated to the 19th–early 20th centuries, as well as larger-size desk sculptures (okimono) from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The fittings of a samurai sword from the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries are notable for the excellence of the ivory carving; attention is also drawn to bamboo canes and a bone case depicting music-making Daoist immortals. Porcelain and faience items from the 19th–early 20th centuries are widely represented, attesting to Japan’s development of its own style—based on Chinese experience—that corresponds to a national aesthetic. The presented exhibition offers a chance to encounter a number of truly unique works that testify to their creators’ aesthetic taste, high craftsmanship, and fidelity to age-old traditions, many of which have not been exhibited for many years.
