Exhibition "Artistic Crafts of Karelia"
About exhibition
The exhibition at the Petrovsky Cultural Center (1 Andropova Street) presents a rich palette of the national culture of the Republic of Karelia as embodied in the works of Karelian masters of decorative and applied arts. The display invites visitors to learn about the everyday life of the peoples of Karelia in the mid-19th to early 20th centuries and traditional male and female crafts: weaving, embroidery, goldwork, ceramics, wood carving and painting, folk dolls, birch-bark weaving, and more. Visitors will discover how, living in the harsh conditions of the North and in frontier areas, people gave an artistic look even to the simplest household objects — from a wooden spoon to a costume — and how Karelian artisans today carefully preserve and enrich this beauty.
