Exhibition "Rook — Bird of the Year 2025"

About exhibition

Each year the Russian Bird Conservation Union selects a "Bird of the Year." Last year that title went to the siskin, and in 2025 it has been awarded to the rook. These fairly large birds belong to the crow family, are about the size of the hooded crow, and resemble crows in appearance. Their distinguishing features are black plumage with blue and purple iridescence, and a large bill with a pale ring at the base. The Kirov City Zoological Museum has prepared an exhibition presenting an adult and a juvenile bird, as well as the closest relatives of this species. At the exhibition visitors can learn about the rook's range, interesting facts, and its characteristics. It has been scientifically proven that rooks possess a high level of intelligence and cognitive abilities. These birds can distinguish colors and also have a well-developed visual memory.
