Exhibition "Towns and Posads of the Russian North"

About exhibition

The exhibition provides information about the towns and posads of the Russian North and about the development of important crafts such as blacksmithing, stonecutting, bone carving, icon painting and others. Special attention is paid to the role of the city of Arkhangelsk as the only international trading port of the Russian state in the 17th century. Arkhangelsk, the first seaport of Russia, was of great importance for the country’s economic and political development and for domestic and international trade. The exhibition displays objects that reveal this crucial part of Pomorye’s history. Among the main exhibits is the banner of the Kholmogory Haiduk Regiment. It was made in the Armory Chamber (Moscow) with funds from the streltsy and money allocated in 1694 by Tsar Peter I for the manufacture of the "regimental establishment".
