Exhibition "Frescoes of the Znamensky Cathedral"
About exhibition
Museum visitors can visit the Znamensky Cathedral, included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The church is currently open to visitors as a monument of architecture and monumental painting. The building's architectural features, more typical of Moscow and the Volga region, make the cathedral the least Novgorod-like in the city. Visitors can appreciate the church's majestic and solemn appearance, intended in every aspect to glorify the miraculous icon preserved within it — the "Our Lady of the Sign." The mural painting was executed in a decorative-narrative style characteristic of that era. The artistic work was carried out during the spring-summer season of 1702 by more than thirty masters from Kostroma, Yaroslavl, and Moscow. Together with the iconostases and works of applied art, the wall painting created a stylistically unified, harmonious artistic ensemble that blends perfectly with the architecture.
