The Lefortovo Museum of History is opening the exhibition 'Wonders and Curiosities of Petrine Moscow', timed to the 300th anniversary of the death of Peter the Great. It will introduce the remarkable legacy left by the first emperor and present objects, engravings, and photographs from the collections of the Museum of Moscow. The reign of Peter I brought Muscovites many surprising and unfamiliar everyday items. We already know about the spread of tobacco and the 'German' dress in the late 17th – early 18th centuries. At the same time, European costume became fashionable in society, a new calendar era was introduced, holidays were launched, and the organization of the army, trade (merchant partnerships), and production was modernized. The exhibition, divided into six sections, will tell in detail about each 'curiosity' of the Petrine period. In the section 'More Precious Than the Stone Bridge...' visitors can learn about the Vsekhsvyatsky (All Saints) Bridge across the Moskva River — it connected Zamoskvorechye with the White City and was considered one of the wonders of Moscow architecture and engineering. Peter I returned across this bridge after the capture of Azov in 1696 — in honor of that event a triumphal arch with figures of the gods Mars, Neptune, and the hero Hercules was erected on it.
