Exhibition "Baltic Frontiers"

About exhibition

The Victory Museum invited visitors to see a unique exhibition from the museums of educational institutions of Moscow and St. Petersburg, dedicated to the defenders of the Baltic during the Great Patriotic War and the post-war period. The exhibition tells of the feats of submariners. Among them is the legendary submarine commander S-13, Hero of the Soviet Union Alexander Marinesko. Under his command in January 1945 the crew of submarine S-13 sank two German military transports in a single patrol, the Wilhelm Gustloff and the General von Steuben. The exposition includes a captain 1st rank's tunic and submariners' uniforms, their personal effects, and archival photographs. Visitors will learn about the history of the S-type submarines and see models of the submarines S-13, Shch-423 and N-31. Part of the exhibition is devoted to the history of the residents of besieged Leningrad. Display cases feature photographs and documents of partisans, virologist scientists, and city residents who are relatives of pupils from School No. 189. Guests will also be shown materials and rarities related to the formation and development of naval aviation and its personalities. For example, personal items and photographs of twice Hero of the Soviet Union ace pilot and, in the postwar period, deputy commander of the Air Force of the Baltic Fleet Vitaly Popkov; awards and items belonging to naval attack aviator and Hero of Russia Viktor Glukharev, who took part in the liberation of Vyborg and Tallinn and the assault on Königsberg, among others. The exhibition continues with a section about contemporary heroes, one of whom is Hero of Russia, honored military pilot Timur Apakidze. He was the first of the Russian naval aviators to land on the deck of the heavy aircraft-carrying cruiser Admiral of the Fleet of the Soviet Union Kuznetsov in the first Russian serial carrier-based fighter Su-27K, today known as the Su-33. "Baltic Frontiers" was prepared by the school museum of the history of naval aviation of School No. 1383 in Moscow and the museum "From the History of S-class Submarines of the Red Banner Baltic Fleet" of School No. 189 in St. Petersburg, named after Hero of the Soviet Union A.I. Marinesko.
