Exhibition “Atom”
About exhibition
“Atom” opens to visitors an atomic industry that was secret for a long time. Its narrative thread is an ascent from the past to the future through the present. The exhibition has three display zones: “The Soviet Atomic Project” introduces the Soviet atomic program and the secret Laboratory No. 2, headed by Igor Kurchatov. Here visitors will see models of the first domestic atomic bomb, RDS-1, the most powerful thermonuclear device ever tested — the “Tsar Bomba” — and will learn why developing their originals was vital for the entire Soviet Union. “Time of the Firsts” transports guests to the era of peaceful uses of the atom. Visitors will see what Soviet scientists dreamed of: the airship “Atomic Ruler of the Sky”, the interstellar spacecraft “Daedalus” — ideas that remained only as drawings and models. The icebreaker “Lenin” and the nuclear submarine are designs that became reality. “Modern Nuclear Industry” introduces visitors to nuclear technologies. Here interactive physical exhibits are combined with large-scale multimedia installations. The centerpiece of the exhibition is a model of a pressurized water reactor. Generating electricity from the energy released by atomic nucleus fission is a complex, coordinated process that can be compared to an orchestra at work. Each instrument here has its own sound. Together they play a symphony composed especially for the Atom museum. Allow two hours to view the exhibition. Full information about the exhibition is available on the museum’s website.
