Exhibition "Archaeology of Vyborg"
About exhibition
The exhibition presents fishing gear. Floats made primarily from pine bark, wood and birch bark are often marked with signs of personal or communal ownership. They have become the most frequent finds in the lowest layers. Stones wrapped in birch bark served as sinkers for nets. Finds of metal fishhooks and other gear are extremely rare, which can be explained by the high cost and difficulty of working metal in antiquity. Nevertheless, it was fishing that carried the potential for future trade and economic development. The materials recovered during the excavations are of considerable value both for the study of material culture and for understanding the emergence of an urban medieval structure across the entire Baltic region. They are an integral part of that culture and illustrate its eastern continuation. The city's cultural layer is an invaluable repository of historical memory. It requires further study and presentation to the wider public for the benefit of Vyborg's centuries-old multinational cultural tradition.
