Exhibition "I Saw Kubachi...": The People of a Single Aul
About exhibition
The Dagestani village of Kubachi has long been renowned as a major center of artistic metalworking. The products of Kubachi masters became widely known not only across the Caucasus but also beyond. Participating in the Eurasian market for art objects and remaining in constant cultural dialogue with other peoples, the Kubachi have managed to preserve the unique character of their ancient culture. The exhibition is the first in the history of the Russian Museum of Ethnography (RME) devoted to the distinctive features of the traditional culture of the Kubachi from the late 19th to the first quarter of the 20th century. The project also marks the first joint collaboration with the A. Taho-Godi National Museum of the Republic of Dagestan, whose collections organically complement the RME’s exhibits. On display are the famous stone reliefs, furnishings of formal reception rooms, masterpieces by Kubachi embroiderers, masquerade costumes, craftsmen’s tools, highly artistic examples of metalwork, as well as original pieces by outstanding 20th-century jewelers.
