Permanent Exhibition of the Museum of History and Archaeology of the Urals

About exhibition

Five floors of the Museum of History and Archaeology of the Urals preserve the region's history from ancient times to the Soviet era. A hall with rare wooden display cabinets and portraits of Ural amateur local historians tells the 'History of UOLE' (the Ural Society of Naturalists, which founded the first museum in Yekaterinburg). 'The Ancient History of the Peoples of the Urals' is represented by bird-shaped idols of the Itkul culture, pottery fragments, and a unique finial in the form of a squirrel's head. In the exhibition 'The Mining World: On the Routes to Siberia' visitors can learn about the figure of Yermak and the settlement of the Urals by Russians, the development of Ural factories in the 18th–19th centuries, Yekaterinburg merchants and Old Believers, and the contribution of Ural residents to the Patriotic War of 1812. Among the valuable artifacts are copperware, coins, and cannons from Ural factories. In the ethnographic exhibition 'On One Land, Under One Sky' visitors can enter a Mansi chum, a Bashkir yurt, and a Russian izba, and see the traditional utensils and costumes of the peoples of the Urals. The Romanov Memorial Hall is devoted to Russia during the reign of Nicholas II and the fate of the imperial family. Here you can see authentic fragments of the interior and decor of the 'House of Special Purpose' (room decor, bronze fittings, the dining-room fireplace, the cellar window grille) and examine it in detail thanks to a scientific 3D reconstruction of engineer Ipatiev's house and a chronicle of the events of July 1918. The 'Urals – To the Front' exhibition was updated in 2015 and tells of the contribution of Ural residents to the victory: on the fronts, in factory workshops, and in collective farm fields.
