Permanent exhibition "Icon Painting of the 15th–19th Centuries"
About exhibition
At the exhibition visitors can see works by masters from Novgorod, Rostov, Yaroslavl, Vologda, Mstera and other icon-painting centers; the royal doors from the mid-17th century; and icons of Saints Nicholas, George and the Prophet Elijah. The iconography of the Mother of God is particularly well represented: various types of Hodegetria, the Virgin of Tenderness (Umilenie) and the Unburnt Bush. Visitors can view a unique double-sided icon "Mother of God Hodegetria" from the early 17th century, originating in Yaroslavl. One of the highlights is the icon "The Miracle of Saint George and the Dragon" (late 15th century, Novgorod school). George is depicted mounted on a black horse — a great rarity; only a few similar works from this period are known. The icons acquired by the museum in 2011 are distinguished by a high level of craftsmanship and excellent preservation.
