One of the first in Russian art of the 1970s, Gennady Raishev turned to the notion of the sign in depiction — the sign-like quality of form, color, and space. In his innovative pursuits he synthesized the latest currents of the early 20th century with an engagement with the archaic art of the North. The exhibition, organized around contrasts, presents different stages of pictorial expression — from early plein-air landscapes to abstract compositions. Overall it is a large space that seems to encompass the full diversity of the mosaic of surrounding life. To the vivid section devoted to the eastern Khanty in the new exhibition is added an equally expressive and spring-lyrical section featuring Mansi and Zyryan motifs. Some works will be shown for the first time in the gallery's new building.
