The collection currently comprises more than 28,000 works, including paintings by F. Rokotov, D. Levitsky, L. Miropolsky, I. Makarov, I. Repin, K. Flavitsky, I. Aivazovsky, I. Shishkin, K. Makovsky, A. Savrasov, A. Bogolyubov, I. Levitan, A. Kuindzhi, N. Goncharova, K. Korovin, A. Lentulov, and R. Falk. In the halls of foreign art are exhibited canvases by J. Vignali, A. van Ostade, M. Hobbema, S. Luttichuys, J. Janssens, P. Minyar, and F. K. Winterhalter. The collection of Soviet-period art and contemporary Russian art is diverse, and the Penza art school is widely represented. The museum's permanent exhibition can satisfy even the most demanding visitor. It houses over a thousand of the best works from the museum's collection, arranged according to the principle of an academic series. By visiting the exhibition halls, visitors can trace the development of Russian and Western European art from the 17th century. All halls form separate exhibition blocks, among them Russian icons, Russian academic painting, the work of the Peredvizhniki (the Wanderers), the Russian avant-garde, Italian art, Dutch art, and French art.
