The gallery is located in the building of a former mosque. In 1913, at the initiative of Stavropol's Muslim society, the well-known architect G. P. Kuskov began construction of the congregational mosque. Soon the white-stone building, executed in the finest traditions of Eastern architecture, became another adornment of the city. In 1987 a landscape gallery of the Honored Artist of Russia and honorary citizen of Stavropol, P. M. Grechishkin, was opened here. The occasion for its opening was the donation by the artist of his paintings to the city. Initially the collection numbered 167 canvases, but thanks to the artist's active involvement the gallery's holdings were expanded and now comprise 490 paintings and 50 graphic works. The main genre in P. M. Grechishkin's oeuvre is the landscape. The artist's plein-air travels form an extensive route: from the steppes of Stavropol, the Caucasus Mountains, the Urals and central Russia, to Lake Baikal, India, Egypt, Nepal and France. A master of color and composition, he is a continuator of the best traditions of the Russian realist landscape.
