Main exhibition of the Central Museum of the Russian Cossacks

About exhibition

The exhibition consists of 16 halls presenting the history of all Cossack troops and the guard formations of the Russian Imperial Army. The display features more than 800 items from the collection of the State Historical Museum on a wide range of topics related to Cossack history (an outstanding numismatic collection; personal Cossack awards – certificates, bestowed kovshes and sabers, named medals; weapons, uniforms and banners; a collection of paintings, graphic art and sculpture; materials from written-source funds; maps; memorial items; etc.). Twenty-two items from the Historical Museum's collection were specially restored for display in the new exhibition. Among the objects presented to the general public for the first time are: a portrait of Don Host Ataman Andrian Denisov (unknown artist, second half of the 19th century); the chekmen (a type of coat) of the general of the foot and horse artillery of the Black Sea Cossack Host (1840–1855); a kaftan of the Buryat Cossack regiments of the Karatsai section (1840s–1850s); and the icon “Mother of God of the Sign” (Kursk-Root), 18th century.
