The Moscow House of Gogol is a unique place. It is located in a historic building of an old urban estate from the 18th–19th centuries in the very center of Moscow. In this house Gogol worked on the second volume of the poem "Dead Souls" and on his spiritual prose, prepared a collected edition of his works for publication, and shortly before his death burned part of his manuscripts. The House of Gogol exhibition consists of six rooms (Entrance Hall, Living Room, Study, "The Government Inspector" Hall, Memorial Room and Hall of Embodiments). The interiors of the rooms where the writer lived have been reconstructed with documentary accuracy based on the recollections of contemporaries who often visited him. Each room contains a main object that conveys the atmosphere and style of the period, as well as the connection of the specific place with Nikolai Gogol's personality. The atmosphere of the mid-19th century prevails here: you can hear the crackle of wood burning in the fireplace and the sounds of Nikitsky Boulevard, where voices, the rumble of passing carriages and the ringing of bells intermingle. The museum collection contains several thousand exhibits: books, items of noble household life, engravings and lithographs from the first half of the 19th century. General, thematic and theatrical tours are offered for a wide range of visitors: schoolchildren, students, philologists and those interested in the life and work of N. V. Gogol.
