Beauty begets kindness
About exhibition
Traditional Mari embroidery is one of the oldest forms of handicraft. Girls were taught to embroider from the ages of 6–7, because by the time of their marriage they were expected to prepare their own dowry: an embroidered dress, a shirt for their future husband, ritual towels (rushniki) and other items. Mari embroidery is a complex type of decorative and applied art. It comprises several embroidery techniques: oblique stitch, painted decoration, counted-thread embroidery, and the nabor seam. As a result, the pieces are of extraordinary beauty. This can be appreciated by visiting the exhibition, and those interested will be able to purchase souvenir products featuring traditional Mari embroidery.
