The City of Two Ks

About exhibition

On October 31, the Amber Museum will open an exhibition from the collection of the Kaliningrad Regional Amber Museum and private artists' collections. Visitors can expect an immersive journey into the rich history of Kaliningrad, once known as Königsberg, and the opportunity to explore its transformations through the lens of jewelry and gem‑cutting art. The exhibition features works made from the region's natural treasure—Baltic amber—which not only demonstrate the artists' craftsmanship but also serve as symbols of historical memory. Some pieces are devoted to architecture, evoking images of Königsberg, its houses and lanes; others reflect notable events in Kaliningrad's history, speak to its seaside setting, and celebrate Baltic nature, creating a bridge between past and present. "The City of Two Ks" is a dialogue between eras that allows viewers to understand the region's cultural heritage and its influence on the present. Here everyone can discover Kaliningrad's history through works of art and feel the atmosphere of a city that has undergone many changes while preserving its unique identity. Amber here is not just a material. It is a time capsule, a resin that holds memory, a light frozen between past and future. The exhibition includes pieces from the Kaliningrad Amber Museum's collection and from private artists' collections, reflecting both local ambercraft traditions and their contemporary interpretations. The display of amber works—the material that for centuries has linked these lands with art and craft—emphasizes continuity and reveals contrasts in the perception of two eras, and also invites reflection on the question: what will our city become in the future? In 2026 the Kaliningrad region will mark the 80th anniversary of its formation. The city has inherited centuries-old cultural traditions and a special respect for its land. Importantly, as before, Kaliningrad remains the homeland of amber.
