Exhibits of the Pyatigorsk Museum of Stone Antiquities
About exhibition
Within the structure of the Pyatigorsk Local History Museum an extraordinary and very attractive exhibition has been operating for six years. It has a distinctly eventful history — revived 135 years after the closure of the first open‑air Museum of Antiquities in the North Caucasus. In addition to the interesting historical and cultural information conveyed by dozens of monuments, their captions and the stands placed along the “Road of Time” in chronological order around and clockwise, visitors have the opportunity to feel an amazing atmosphere and enter a world of myths, legends and mystical beliefs. But if you see the ancient stele — which appears especially warm in every season — bearing an image of the Tree of Life from the 4th millennium BCE, an ornamented fragment of an ancient dolmen, Scythian and Polovtsian statues, the very rare and easternmost Bosporan plaque with a Greek inscription, an early Christian cross, and a medieval sacrificial stone with depictions of animals, your imaginative impressions will certainly be greatly enriched. And above all this, in the center of the exhibition rises the particularly mysterious three‑meter “guardian of age‑old culture” — a symbol of the verticality of time, the focus of still‑unresolved relief narrative images and the bearer of an as‑yet undeciphered inscription — “Duka‑Bek”. Follow the example of the tens of thousands of people who have already visited the museum and gain your own special personal impression!
