The museum complex is located in a block of historic buildings — the 130th block (Irkutsk Sloboda) — in a restored wooden architectural monument. The department's exhibition is devoted to the scientific exploration of Siberia, the activities of the Governors-General of Eastern Siberia (members of the Russian Geographical Society), and the study of and incorporation into Russia of the northeastern part of the Asian continent. Permanent exhibitions: "The Eurasian Continent"; "At the Sources of the Amur Land"; "Governors-General of Eastern Siberia"; "Irkutsk — a Center of Migration Routes".
