The Prison Castle, until 1989 one of the strictest prisons in Russia, is now the Museum of Siberian Katorga and Exile. Visitors can learn about the daily life of prisoners from the pre‑revolutionary and Soviet periods; the bravest can descend into the gloomy underground dungeon that has preserved the oppressive atmosphere of incarceration. If you are not put off by stories and legends of ghosts, stay at the "Uznik" hostel located in the very center of the Prison Castle. Visitors can buy the museum's signature rusks and souvenirs at the prison shop, warm up in the tearoom, and take commemorative photos in the photo area.
