The museum is located in a 19th-century merchant's mansion; its exhibitions tell the rich history of the area through the lives of people and important events. Visitors can learn about the history of Borovichi and the Borovichi district—from the Neolithic period to the early 20th century. Major themes presented in the exhibitions include: 'Archaeology': finds from settlements and burial mounds, and an interactive 'archaeodrome' that allows visitors to explore Borovichi's history using multimedia technologies. 'The Petrine era and navigation': the travels of Peter I and Catherine II along the Msta River (the most interesting artifacts in this section are pilot charts and related items). 'Industry': the history of the Nobel factories and other enterprises that operated in the Borovichi uyezd. 'Merchants and nobility': a ceremonial hall with weapons, awards, and manor interiors. Temporary exhibitions complement the permanent displays by revealing new topics.
