Exhibitions of the Roerich Family Museum-Institute
About exhibition
Unique interiors and the atmosphere of the historic mansion of academician Mikhail Petrovich Botkin, located on Vasilyevsky Island, await you. Vasilyevsky Island is the birthplace of Nikolai Konstantinovich Roerich. The museum is primarily dedicated to four members of this unique family (Nikolai Konstantinovich, Elena Ivanovna, Yuri Nikolaevich and Svyatoslav Nikolaevich Roerich), who made a huge contribution to twentieth-century world culture. The museum's concept is based on the Roerichian idea that a museum is "a dwelling of all kinds of the beautiful, and not merely in the sense of preserving certain specimens, but in the sense of their living and creative application." Today the museum-institute's collections number around twenty thousand items, including personal belongings, manuscripts, paintings, decorative and applied arts, archaeological finds, photographs and other cultural treasures that reflect the broad context of the life and work of the Roerich family.
