The public museum of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels was established in 1987, and in 1991 it became the Marks Local History Museum. The museum is housed in a separate two-story brick mansion built at the beginning of the 20th century. The museum's collection currently numbers over 6,000 items. Of particular value is the collection of ethnographic objects (more than 1,100 items), which provides a broad picture of occupations, trades, crafts and various aspects of daily life in Ekaterinenstadt (Baronsk). This settlement of German colonist craftsmen on the Volga was granted town status after 1917. The main exhibition presents items that tell the history of the town from Ekaterinenstadt to Marks. These include furniture, examples of decorative and applied arts, clothing, household items, embroidery, as well as exhibits related to the tragic history of the deportation of the Volga Germans and the town’s experience during the Great Patriotic War (1941–1945). In addition to the historical exhibition, the museum hosts a permanent display titled "Flora and Fauna of the Marks District".
