The main building of the Tatarstan Museum of Fine Arts is located in a two-storey state-owned manor-style mansion built in the early 20th century as the residence of the commander of the troops of the Kazan Military District. Today it is one of the city’s most beautiful buildings; the surviving fence around it is one of the finest examples of Chebaksin latticework. The exhibition includes monuments of Old Russian icon painting of the 16th century as well as works of Russian painting of the 18th–19th centuries. Here you can see works by masters such as D. G. Levitsky, V. L. Borovikovsky, F. S. Rokotov, V. A. Tropinin, I. K. Aivazovsky, I. I. Levitan, V. A. Serov, K. A. Korovin, I. E. Repin and I. I. Shishkin.
