Exhibitions of the Metenkov House Photographic Museum
About exhibition
The foundation for the only photographic museum in the Urals was laid in 1993, when the administration of Yekaterinburg, heeding the opinions of local historians and scholars, abandoned plans to demolish the old mansion on Karl Liebknecht Street that, before the Revolution, had belonged to the photographer Veniamin Leontyevich Metenkov. On August 10, 1998, the "Metenkov House" officially opened its doors to visitors. Its core collection was formed by the extensive private collection of Evgeny Mikhailovich Biryukov. The Ural local historian and photographer donated, free of charge, equipment, photographs, posters, souvenirs, books, magazines, and postcards to the new museum. Today the museum's collections reflect one and a half centuries of the development of photographic art in Yekaterinburg. Historical exhibitions are combined with projects by contemporary photographers. Over the years the museum has become an art space hosting exhibitions, lectures, workshops, round-table discussions, creative meetings, film screenings, concerts, performances, and other cultural events.
