Exhibition 'Western European and Eastern Art of the 16th–20th Centuries'

About exhibition

The exhibition is housed in a mansion dating from the first third of the 19th century. It brings together a collection of Western European and Eastern art: paintings, graphic works, sculpture, furniture, and decorative and applied arts from the 16th to the early 20th century. Western European painting is represented by works by Dutch and Flemish artists of the 17th century — the Golden Age of Dutch art. Among the works by French artists is a lifetime portrait of the American statesman and scientist Benjamin Franklin, painted by A. Fiyel. The Italian Art Hall is adorned with canvases by the celebrated J. Guercino and valuable examples of artistic furniture from the collection of V. Kochubey. These include Florentine wedding cassoni of the 16th century and a table with a Florentine mosaic top. The Hall of the East presents examples of 19th-century Japanese ukiyo-e prints and everyday objects from Japan and China of the 18th–20th centuries. Rare exhibits include court Chinese costume items made of silk from the Qing dynasty with hand embroidery.
