The scale and intensity of the events that swept over Russia in the first half of the 20th century are unparalleled and exceptional: two world wars, three revolutions, the overthrow of age-old institutions, mass repressions, brutal social experiments... And yet it is also an era of great hopes, unprecedented enthusiasm, creative labor, and a time of remarkable discoveries and achievements in industry, science, education, literature, and the arts.
