About exhibition

The exhibition introduces visitors to the main stages of the Second Kamchatka Expedition led by Vitus Bering across Russia. From September 19 until early November 1733, the expedition members stayed in Osa. Why the expedition members stopped in Osa, what they did there, and what difficulties they encountered — all of this can be learned from the exhibition materials. The canvas by Perm artist Yevgeny Shirokov, “The Beginning of V. Bering’s Great Northern Expedition. Osa, 1733”, a model of the Osa fortress and household items of its inhabitants, a river anchor and sledges (rozvalni), as well as copies of Bering’s letters written from Osa to the head of the Ural mining plants V. I. Gennin and to his hometown Horsens in Denmark, allow visitors to immerse themselves in those distant times and learn about Osa’s history in the early 18th century. The exhibition is complemented by a multimedia program that provides detailed information about the Second Kamchatka Expedition under Vitus Bering: the route, the expedition members, and the important scientific and geographical discoveries made during the expedition.
