The I. S. Turgenev Museum is one of the oldest literary museums in Russia. It was opened in the year of the writer's 100th birthday in his native city of Oryol. The museum's exhibition is built around Turgenev relics, items that belonged to the writer's relatives and friends, an extensive gallery of portraits of Turgenev and his contemporaries, sculptural portraits and casts of works by ancient masters, objects of material culture from the mid-19th century, priceless books from the memorial library, items from Turgenev's Paris study, and the gown and cap of an honorary Doctor of Civil Law awarded to the great writer by the University of Oxford.
