Exhibition "Contemporary Art of Korea"
About exhibition
The works of masters from the Korean Peninsula are represented in the exhibition by a variety of fine and decorative-applied art pieces created in the late 20th – early 21st centuries. The art of brush mastery is reflected in so-e calligraphies. Works of Korean landscape painting, sansuhwa ("mountain-water"), show an organic synthesis of the traditions of classical East Asian painting and innovations. The art of silk embroidery in the double-sided screen "Pheasants" and in the compositions "The Fairy" and "Dano Festival" reaches exceptional subtlety of execution. The production of artistic lacquers flourished in the late Joseon period (19th century). The four-panel, mother-of-pearl-inlaid lacquer screen "Ancient Pyongyang" is decorated with "pictures of the four seasons" and "scenic views of celebrated places." Korean ceramics are famed for their refinement and sophistication, their variety of forms, dynamic painting, and the natural color of their glazes. Celadon masters are reviving the once-lost celebrated technique. The museum exhibition clearly demonstrates the preservation and development of Korean art traditions.
