The Solzavod Museum-Reserve in the town of Solikamsk is the only museum in the world based on a 19th-century wooden industrial enterprise producing salt by the boiling method. In the 17th century up to 70% of the salt in the Prikamye (Kama) region was produced by boiling. It was made from natural brines at salt-boiling works. One of these, the late 19th-century Ust-Borovsky plant, has been preserved to this day. The Solzavod Museum-Reserve is now located on its grounds. The brine-lifting tower building is a monument of 19th-century wooden industrial architecture and demonstrates the technology of drilling brine-lifting wells and pumping brine using a pump. The exhibition displays preserved elements of drilling tools and parts of the pumping mechanism that are over 120 years old. This industrial heritage provides a key to understanding the importance of the engineering profession and the development of modern drilling technologies.
