Exhibition: Observation Deck "Tower"
About exhibition
Today the Tower is a regional cultural heritage site, a monument of history and architecture. It occupies a key place on the central square, being one of the town's three vertical landmarks. After restoration the Tower has four tiers that host various themed exhibitions. The 1st tier is an information floor. On the 2nd tier is the exhibition "Salt of the Russian Land". It tells the story of salt production in Staraya Russa. It is no coincidence that a saltworks is depicted on the town's coat of arms. The people of Russa are proud of salt-making; they have not forgotten the craft and are reviving it. On the 2nd tier a salt-maker lives and hands out traditional Old-Russian salt. Read the legend carefully and keep its essence in mind. The exhibition on the 3rd tier is called "History of the Staraya Russa Water Tower." You will see an accurate scale model. Display cases contain original items from the early 20th century that the attendants (waterworks operators) used when servicing the tower's technical equipment. On the 4th tier of the Water Tower, in the top decorative level at a height of 30 metres, is the observation deck. From here, from a bird's-eye perspective, you can see almost all of Staraya Russa. At different times of year and day the town reveals new views to visitors, painting the panorama in different colours. Along the windows of the observation deck is a photo exhibition "Staraya Russa in the late 19th–early 20th centuries." You can immerse yourself in the past, compare the old town with the modern one, and imagine the changes that have taken place over that time.
