The formation of the museum collection began with the acquisition of portraits from the collection of E. V. Barsov, a corresponding member of the Imperial Saint Petersburg Academy of Sciences. The core collection was built up thanks to contributions from the State Museum Fund, the Russian Museum, the Academy of Arts, and private collections. The three exhibition halls are arranged in the traditional chronological sequence of art history — from the 18th to the early 20th century. The collection features portraits of members of the royal family and ceremonial portraits, paintings by well-known artists: pupils of Karl Bryullov Ivan Makarov and Pyotr Petrovsky, a study by Ilya Repin, and works by Boris Kustodiev and Ivan Kulikov, who together with him painted the large-scale canvas "The Solemn Meeting of the State Council", as well as paintings by Konstantin Makovsky and Vasily Kandinsky. The paintings are harmoniously complemented by glass and porcelain pieces, bronze items from the collection of the prominent Russian industrialist S. S. Abamelek-Lazarev, and antique mechanical musical instruments.
