Exhibition "Russian Icons of the 11th–19th Centuries"
About exhibition
The exhibition presents such unique and well-known icons as “The Apostles Peter and Paul” from the mid-11th century from Saint Sophia Cathedral, “Saint Nicholas of Myra” (1294) by the master Aleksa Petrov, “Saints Boris and Gleb” from the second half of the 14th century from the Church of Saints Boris and Gleb in Plotniki, “The Battle of the Novgorodians and the Suzdalans” from the mid-15th century, “The Deësis tier and praying Novgorodians” (1467 (?)) and others. In two halls are exhibited ensembles of Novgorod iconostases of the mid-16th century — outstanding for their artistic merits and almost complete state of preservation — from the Church of the Apostles Peter and Paul in Kozhevniki and the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Theotokos of the Antoniev Monastery. In addition to Novgorod monuments, the exhibition includes icons created in Moscow, Pskov, Yaroslavl, Tikhvin and Vologda, which helps to more clearly reveal not only the stylistic distinctiveness of Novgorod painting but also the complex mutual influences among the artistic centers of Ancient Rus'.
